1.Characteristics and applications of aluminum-steel clad metals (aluminum-steel explosive clad metals, aluminum-steel explosive welded block)
Although some engineers have had success in spot welding steel and aluminum together, it has largely been considered difficult to achieve reliable, continuous welds directly between the two dissimilar metals. That changed, however, when explosion welding was developed for doing that very thing.
Explosive welding is considered to be a solid-state welding process that uses controlled explosive energy to force two or more metals together at high pressures. The resultant composite system is joined with a high-quality metallurgical bond.
With other advantages like high efficiency, low cost and less requirement in equipment, explosive welding would be the optimal choice for welding aluminum to steel.
Its technical performance index as following: shear strength≥ 300N/mm2;according to the special requirements for products, such as the clad plate used for Petrochemical hydrogenation unit, conjoint ratio can reach 100%; interface shear strength>196MPa; the thickness of cladding layer 1~2mm, can be more thicker, the thickness of backer ≥1mm. The size of clad steel plate is not limited by explosive welding technical.

Light Weight: density of steel is around 7.85g/cm3,the density of aluminum is around 2.7g/cm3, only 1/3 of steel. Aluminum-steel clad metals can save energy; they can be used to make plane parts, vehicles, ships, etc. Due to aluminum-steel clad metals has aluminum's characteristics as well as steel's strength, the structures made by this clad metals have been widely used in many industries.

The thickness of oxide film is around 0.01~0.05mm, this characteristic makes the aluminum has self-recovery function after its surface is scratched.
Excellent formability: after heat treating, aluminum-steel clad metals can be used to make lots of products such as tubes, tanks and pots by punching, blanking and welding.
High strength: aluminum-steel clad metals processed by explosive welding, has steel's strength as well as aluminum's characteristics, and its strength can be comparable with quality alloy steel.
High heat conductivity: aluminum heat conductivity is high, just next to copper, around 60% of copper coefficient of heat conduction; however, the same weight of copper and aluminum, aluminum is better than copper in coefficient of heat conduction. Whatever heating or cooling, aluminum is a very good preferred medium transmitting heat. Therefore, aluminum-steel clad metal is widely used in food industry, chemical industry, petroleum industry, and aviation industry. High electric conductivity: aluminum is one of the only two high electric conductivity metals. The electric conductivity of conductive-aluminum is 62% of international standard copper, but the density of aluminum is only 1/3 of copper. This makes the electric conductivity of unit weight of aluminum is two times of unit weight of copper. Good recycling: since different material dissolution ratio, fragments, and scraps of aluminum-steel clad metals are easy decomposed, melted, and recovered; and recycling only needs 3% of energy consumption.
Functions: aluminum-steel clad metals have these functions: protection, decoration, shielding, etc, as well as the following advantages: high hardness, wear resistance, electrical insulation, electromagnetic, resistance magnetic shielding, photo electricity, hydrophilic, corrosion resistance, etc.
Good resistance to high temperature: high temperature performance of aluminum-steel clad metals is almost the same compared with the stainless steel 316L.
Long lifetime: the lifetime of aluminum-steel clad metals can last more than 60 years.
Thermodynamics stability: aluminum-steel clad metals on the structure, take full consideration to optimize coefficient of linear expansion, hardness, melting solid point, moisture, elastic modulus, electrode potential, and thermal combined mechanical stability related to long lifetime among different materials; these make steel belt (or copper belt, titanium belt, etc.) its surface layer formed amorphous mixed with nanocrystalline aluminum-nickel-iron alloy.
Noise reduction and sound insulation: aluminum-steel clad metals can be changed surface structure, and processed internal foam pores to reduce noise and insulate sound according to the market requirements.
